When is Intersex Day of Remembrance 2024 and what does it mean?

Intersex Day of Remembrance (also known as Intersex Solidarity Day) is an annual observance held on November 8th to raise awareness of the human rights issues faced by intersex people around the world.

The day was first observed in 2005, and since then it has grown in importance and recognition. It is a time to remember and honour those who have been subjected to human rights abuses related to their intersex status, as well as to celebrate the progress that has been made in advancing the rights of intersex people.

On Intersex Day of Remembrance, advocates come together to recognise these human rights violations and reaffirm their commitment to advancing the rights of intersex people. This includes increasing public awareness about intersex issues, advocating for greater legal protections for intersex people, and promoting respect for bodily autonomy regardless of sex or gender identity.

In addition to raising awareness, many organizations also use Intersex Day of Remembrance as an opportunity for education about the unique needs of the intersex community. This can include sharing stories from intersex individuals, providing resources for those who are seeking support or information on intersex issues, discussing strategies for fighting discrimination against intersex individuals in schools or workplaces, and encouraging allies to become advocates for intersex rights.

Intersex Day of Remembrance is an important reminder that all people deserve respect regardless of their sex or gender identity. It is a time to recognise the struggles experienced by many intersex individuals around the world while also celebrating progress made towards achieving greater acceptance and inclusion for all people.

What does intersex mean?

An intersex person has anatomical, chromosomal, or other biological characteristics that don’t fall into what society typically labels as male or female. An intersex person doesn’t always have both male and female sex organs. In fact, there are at least 16 different ways a person can be intersex.

Determining a person's biological sex can be lot more complex than you might expect. As such, there are a lot more intersex individuals than one might expect (some estimates put it at 1 in 770 births).

Unfortunately, many societies view this kind of diversity as a problem and have subjected intersex people to discrimination and human rights abuses such as forced sterilization and genital mutilation.

How did Intersex Day of Remembrance first start off?

Intersex Day of Remembrance (also known as Intersex Solidarity Day) is an annual observance to commemorate and bring awareness to the experiences of intersex individuals. It began in 2005, following an invitation issued by Joëlle-Circé Laramée, then Canadian spokeswoman for Organisation Intersex International.

The day was originally conceived to memorialise the life of Herculine Barbin, a 19th-century French intersex individual whose memoirs were published in 1980. While Barbin's experiences are from a different era, her story resonates with many modern intersex individuals who experience similar challenges with gender identity and social acceptance.

In addition to celebrating Barbin's life and achievements, Intersex Day of Remembrance also serves as an opportunity for individuals, communities, and organizations to come together in solidarity and support those who identify as intersex. By raising awareness about issues faced by intersex individuals, Intersex Day of Remembrance helps create safe spaces for those whose gender identity or expression falls outside traditional societal norms.

What is the significance of Intersex Day of Remembrance?

Intersex Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the struggles of intersex people and recognise the victories they have achieved. It serves as a reminder that intersex people still face discrimination and violence in many parts of the world. The day also seeks to remind us that we must fight for the rights of people with intersex traits, who are often silenced and marginalised.

Intersex Day of Remembrance is an important day for human rights, as it helps to raise awareness of the unique struggles faced by those who identify as intersex. It is a time to reflect on how far we have come in terms of recognition and acceptance, but also how far we still have to go. By working together, we can create a society where everyone is respected regardless of their gender identity or sex characteristics. This day serves as an important reminder that we all need to work together if we want to create a more inclusive society for all.
