What does nonbinary (non-binary) mean?
| Updated onNonbinary (or non-binary) folks don't identify with either the male or female gender, and are hence said to be “beyond the gender binary” (the “gender binary” refers to the false idea that there are only 2 genders). Some nonbinary folks identify with a mix of male and female genders, with a gender that falls beyond male or female, or with no gender at all.
It's a common misconception to think that nonbinary folks fall “between” the male and female genders. However, it's more accurate to describe them as falling “beyond” the confines of just either a male or female gender.

Nonbinary folks are generally classified to be under the transgender umbrella. The shorthand for nonbinary folks is enby.
